Hello! These are the rules for Southbound, a game developed by Nathan Brown.
Southbound is played on UT campus with two teams: red and blue. Your goal is for your team to score more points than the other team by the end of 6 rounds.
Every player will receive a team-colored flag football belt. You must wear your flag football belt for all 6 rounds.
Every player will also receive a team-colored wristband. This wristband is important because it is how you will score points for your team. If you have your wristband on, it must be clearly visible (you can't hide it behind your sleeve, for example).
The game consists of 6 rounds. In each round, one team is the rushers and the other team is the defenders. Red and blue will alternate being rushers and defenders each round.
There are 8 buildings on campus that serve as checkpoints: UNB, FAC, WCH, WEL, GOL, SUT, GAR, and WAG. All players can enter all checkpoints.
Before each round begins, the rushing team will select 3 of the 8 checkpoints to be activated for that round. If a checkpoint is activated, players on the rushing team cannot be tagged anywhere inside that building.
Checkpoints that are not activated do not provide any protection against tagging.
Everyone wears a flag football belt. To tag someone, you must grab one of their belt flags.
You may not hold onto your belt or any of your belt flags in an attempt to avoid being tagged.
If you get tagged, you must immediately (as fast as you can) give your wristband to the person who tagged you. After you give them your wristband, they must give you your belt flag back.
Once you are tagged, you are out for the remainder of the round. You should continue to the South Mall, but you may not score points during that round (because you no longer have your wristband).
To score points for your team, you must reach the safe zone in the South Mall and deposit your wristband into the cardboard box that Nathan will be manning.
Each round lasts 8 minutes: the round starts when the timer displays 8:00 and ends when the timer displays 0:00. Once the round is over, nobody can deposit wristbands into the cardboard box anymore, even if they are in the safe zone.
The game is played within specific campus boundaries. Players are not allowed to cross any of the following streets during the game:
If you cross any of these streets, you are considered out of bounds and must return to the playable area.
Your safety is more important than winning the game. Do not run recklessly into traffic, bikes, scooters, or pedestrians. Be aware of where you are going. Do not tackle, shove, or play aggressively.
If playing safely conflicts with gameplay, choose to be safe.
If there is a dispute about rules, tagging, scoring, or gameplay, Nathan is the referee and his decision is final.
If you have questions about the rules, please find Nathan and ask him.
